Small firms demand 'active role' from govt

Date: 21st November 2008

The vast majority of British business start-ups are demanding that the government play a more active role in supporting them.

Research by the software firm Intuit discovered that almost three quarters of business start-ups believe that Whitehall isn't doing enough to help them through the financial crisis.

What's more, nearly two-thirds of firms have stated that they are unhappy with the assistance they have been offered by the banking sector.

Group strategy manager at Intuit, Catherine Harrell, commented: "The government's move is clearly a welcome one.

"There are tough times ahead and small business success will be dependent on a number of factors, specifically ample support from banks."

The investigation found that half of business start-ups felt that their banks could be more supportive by reducing their charges.

Business start-ups that have been affected by the presently challenging economic climate should consider speaking to an accountant for advice.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
