Self-employed workers can market themselves 'for free'

Freelancers offered marketing advice
UK contractors can market themselves in various ways without breaking the bank, one freelancing expert has claimed.

Carole Seawert, founder of Freelance Factfile, has claimed that social media is a great way for contractors to attract new business without spending money.

"I think a low cost way to do it is with social media - you get a really good profile on LinkedIn … and [you should] be active on Twitter. You don't have to spend lots of money on expensive marketing activities - word of mouth can be a good [avenue]."

Ms Seawert also advocated writing a blog in order for workers to demonstrate their expertise.

"It's a really good idea to get a website up and running and I think the lowest cost way to do that would be on Wordpress - because it's free - and you can get templates and you don't actually need a designer," she added.

"Then, if you link your blog to your website, it's a good way of getting extra traffic to your site - so there's quite a lot of ways that you can market yourself without it costing money."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
