North-east firms call for pre-budget taxation cuts

Date: 21st November 2008

Business start-ups in the north-east of England have called for taxation cuts at the coming pre-budget announcement, nebusiness.co.uk has reported.

Chancellor Alistair Darling will address the House of Commons on Monday (November 24th) after being faced with increasing pressure to cut taxation and VAT.

While business start-ups in the region are keen to save on taxation come the pre-budget speech, company managers are also aware of the implications of such policy.

Managing director of north-east haulage firm Nicholsons Transport, David Nicholson, told nebusiness.co.uk: "If I had a choice I'd cut VAT permanently. We're living for now - which is great - but with government borrowing going up, it's likely we will have to pay it all back later."

High taxation is just one of the difficulties business start-ups have had to face this year, as well as rising bank charges and changes to the self-assessment tax return process.

Earlier this week, the British Retail Consortium confirmed that it would be lobbying the government for business taxation cuts.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
