Injury and illness statistics outlined by HSE

Date: 29th May 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published new survey results detailing a rise in work-related ill-health among employees.

Results from the 2006-07 Labour Force Survey (LFS) suggests workers are losing 1.5 days a year because of sickness and injury caused by or on their jobs.

This figure is the highest since 2003-04.

In all, more than one million employees are suffering from a health problem they believe was caused or exacerbated by current or previous work.

Among the industries most affected were health and social work, construction and defence.

Meanwhile, one in every 100 workers has experienced a non-fatal reportable injury at work, predominantly in the construction, manufacturing and transport sectors.

The Labour Force Survey is a quarterly sample survey of households living at private addresses in Great Britain, which is used to provide information on the country's labour market to help develop, direct and evaluate labour market policies.

Q: Last year we refurbished the kitchen in a small café business we run and reclaimed the VAT on the work done. The business has now decreased to an extent where we can deregister for VAT. If we deregister will we have to refund the VAT claimed on the refurbishment?
