Importance of business procurement and purchasing highlighted by CIPS

Date: 16th May 2008

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) has confirmed the value of procurement and purchasing during less economically certain times.

According to Roy Ayliffe, director of professional practice with CIPS, while it may certainly be beneficial for a business to engage in the process of outsourcing for some areas of purchasing, following this process for all areas of the business procurement process is not advisable.

"What [businesses] can do is outsource the purchasing of certain categories to specialist organisations who are particularly good at that," said Mr Ayliffe.

Moreover, according to the results of the most recent salaries and reward survey, the wages of purchasing sector senior employs has now extended beyond the existing national salary average.

The survey was created by Croner Reward, a division Wolters Kluwer UK, in partnership with CIPS.

"At a time like this, as budgets are tight for people right now, what tends to happen is that purchasing people are valued a bit more."
