HSE offers advice for businesses

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a list of top ten tips for businesses.

Available on the organisation's website, the HSE's list of requirements that must be followed by a majority of businesses, including the obligation for most companies to register either with a local authority or the HSE.

The organisation also recommends that companies ensure they are holders of Employers' Liability Compulsory Insurance.

"You must protect the health and safety of your workers and others who might be affected by you work," said the HSE, an organisation established as a consequence of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

"Health and safety is about sensible, proportionate actions that protect people - not unnecessary bureaucracy and paperwork."

The HSE also recommends that, in addition to providing facilities such as toilets, drinking water and washing facilities, businesses also engage their workforce in consultation over issues relating to health and safety.
