HMRC urges parents to keep them informed

Date: 11th August 2011

Parents urged to contact HMRC over child benefitParents across the UK could see their child benefit removed if they fail to keep HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) up-to-date with their youngsters' education plans.

The department has called on parents with teenagers approaching the age of 16 years to let them know immediately if their children are to continue in education.

Steve Lamey, HMRC's director of benefits and credits, explained: "At this time of year, families decide whether a child will continue in education or training once they have seen their GCSE results.

"If their child is staying on full-time, they need to let us know the full details as soon as possible so that their child benefit doesn't stop on August 30th."

The department added that in order to ensure they remain in receipt of their benefits, parents must inform HMRC of the details regarding the course and qualification their children will attend.

This must include a start date and end date of any courses taken as well as the name and address of the school or college where the course is being held.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
