HMRC placed under microscope

Date: 14th July 2011

HMRC's effectiveness brought into focusSmall business owners across the UK could be among those interested in recent activity regarding HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The Treasury Sub-Committee has held an evidence session today in order to determine the effectiveness of the department.

'Administration and effectiveness of HMRC: Closing the tax gap' saw a number of tax experts attend including John Whiting, tax policy director at the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Chas Roy-Chowdhury, head of taxation at the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants, David Heaton, chairman of the tax faculty at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and Taxaid technical director Frances Corrie.

It comes after taxpayers were recently issued a warning to double check any correspondence from HMRC before issuing a response.

According to the Low Income Tax Reform Group. the department's calculations will only ever be as good as the data held on their computers, even in cases where taxpayers are offered a rebate.
