FPB: Shop around for utilities

Date: 3rd April 2008

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is urging small businesses to shop around for the best deals on utilities.

With five million households switching energy providers in the last year, the FPB says that businesses should also consider their options.

"Electricity and gas supplies are always on tap, so most businesses make the excuse that they are too busy to get to grips with the problem and push the action needed to the bottom of the pile," Commented Colin Beake, managing director of Utility Options, the FPB's energy partner.

The FPB says that all major energy suppliers have increased their prices over the last year, leaving many small business owners dissatisfied with the service they are receiving.

Energy price hikes are currently being investigated by Ofgem, with a report expected to be published in September.

British Gas recently announced a 500 per cent increase in profits over the last year.

The FPB advises small business owners to use the services of its partner organisation, Utility Options, which is designed to show small companies where the best energy and service deals can be found.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
