Expert outlines warning over agency workers

Date: 28th May 2008

Agency workers could soon be entitled to the same employment rights as their permanent counterparts after 12 weeks in a particular role, it has been warned.

The government has agreed with the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry to bring in a law that offers these entitlements after 12 weeks, but David Yeadle from the manufacturers' organisation the EEF believes the final ruling could still be less favourable for employers.

Mr Yeadle, who is the EEF's deputy employment director, is convinced that the 12-week watershed could be reduced further as a result of pressure on government policy makers before laws are brought in next year.

"There are still a number of hurdles to clear and officials might be unhappy with its wording and take a much stronger line," he told PersonnelToday.

"Employers are a long way from the end of the road [with this deal]," he added.

The EEF aims to provide expert advice and support for technology, engineering and manufacturing firms around the UK that are collectively responsible for employing close to a million people.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
