Disability scheme creates 23 new business owners

Date: 7th March 2008

A disability initiative launched by councils in Devon has created 23 small businesses since 2006.

The Disabled Entrepreneurs Project (DEP), which is due to end this month, was designed to support disabled entrepreneurs by offering them guidance on starting a small business, tax planning and small business accounts advice, the Western Morning News reports.

Liz Abell, programme co-ordinator for Devon Renaissance - a group which contributed to the project, commented: "By offering expert advice and support, it has enabled disabled people who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to set up their own businesses and to benefit the local economy."

Organisers claim that all beneficiaries of the scheme gained confidence and new business skills, even though some participants have decided against starting a business immediately.

According to the council, the DEP programme founder is himself a suffer of Parkinson's Disease and was eager to ensure that disabled entrepreneurs had adequate support networks in place to fulfil their business aspirations.
