Contractor market tempting for IT pros

Date: 22nd February 2011

Will IT pros move into contracting? The contracting community could be proving to be more of a temptation of IT workers, it has been claimed.

ITContractor.com has claimed that the contract market is currently a much safer option that previously believed.

Gerry McLaughlin, a spokesman for the organisation, said: 'Whereas previously IT contracting was highly cyclical and many contractors spent what they had built up in the good times during long spells out of work, it looks as if IT contracting has become a much safer profession.

'Companies now see them as the enablers of cost cutting during a downturn as well as being core to the business during an upturn - so contractors now have an each way bet. This new job safety could well tempt more permanent IT workers, who were previously risk-averse, to go into IT contracting in the future.'

The expert's comments come after the Bank of Scotland's latest Report on Jobs revealed that the rate of temp billings growth increased to a forty-three month high between December 2010 and last month.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
