CIPD offers advice for 'long-term prosperity'

Date: 27th January 2010

The CIPD has advised firms to pull in the same directionUK firms must ensure all areas of their business are pulling in the same direction in order to achieve sustained success.

This is the view of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) which said firms must ensure all sections of their organisation are "focused on the same vision and values, objectives and end goal" as they negotiate the economic recovery.

The comment follows the publication of the CIPD's research programme 'Shaping the Future'.

Based on findings from the report, the CIPD also advised companies to ensure a "clear strategy" is set by leaders and to balance short-term objectives with the long-term ambitions of the firm.

Jill Miller, CIPD lead researcher, said focussing on how to achieve long-term success will be increasingly important as the UK begins "a long, slow climb out of recession".

"Clear vision, strong leadership, great managers and engaged employees are all important – but these all come together to deliver sustainable performance only where shared purpose exists and is supported by co-ordinated, empowered and innovative management at all levels," she added.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
