Britons 'working too hard'

Date: 6th June 2008

Members of staff in the UK are working increasingly long hours, it has been claimed.

According to the findings of a study by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the number of individuals working hours considered to be excessive has increased - consequently stress levels are rising and these employees are less able to spend time with family members.

"Pressure is part and parcel of all work and helps to keep us motivated. But excessive pressure can lead to stress, which undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill," said the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The study by the TUC found that a total of 3.3 million individuals in the UK are now spending more than 48 hours at work every week.

The symptoms of stress can be alleviated in a number of different ways, including through exercise and meditation.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
