Bad managers 'often don't listen'

Date: 25th June 2008

Poor managers often do not listen to what their more junior colleagues are saying, it has been claimed.

Bruce Katcher, the author of 30 Reasons Employee Hate Their Managers: What Your People May Be Thinking and What You Can Do About It, poor-quality mangers will have at least one flaw, which can include not listening.

"The thinking is you've got to be (a jerk) to be a senior manager. People get promoted because of technical skills and not people skills," said Mr Katcher.

"[Managers] have to wake up every morning, come to work and say to themselves, they will respect employees and listen to them."

It was also noted that such senior members of staff can be prone to putting their needs ahead of the requirements of the team.

Published in partnership with Adam Snyder, Mr Katcher's book is based upon the responses of over 50,000 workers.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
