Date: 20th November 2009

Filing in iXBRL is to become mandatoryHM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) issued new advice on the software available to firms that wish to file their corporation tax online.

The taxation authority has made public a list of approved programmes on its website, but has also warned that businesses must do their research before picking a specific software provider.

Under UK law, all corporation tax returns must be filed in a data standard known as iXBRL after 2011.

Businesses can get the relevant software and forms either from HMRC directly or through third party suppliers.

The list is made up of the firms which have already been tested for being capable of producing elements of corporation tax returns in iXBRL.

HMRC added: "Other features of the software listed have not been tested, including usability and security, and you must therefore ensure that your software of choice meets your full filing requirement.

"A number of software suppliers are still currently testing their products with us."
