IT professionals urged to move to electronic records

Date: 2nd November 2010

Expert urges IT pros to adopt electronic document managmentSole traders working in the UK's IT sector could be among those encouraged to adopt electronic document management (EDM) systems following the recent comments of one expert.

Julian Buck, managing director of document management software firm Version One, has urged IT workers to adopt EDM systems in order to benefit from their ease of use and cost savings.

The comments come after a Version One survey revealed that 86 per cent of IT professionals still rely on paper records, with more than half (51 per cent) saying they are "very reliant" on physical documents.

According to Mr Buck, it is "astonishing" that so many IT workers are reluctant to adopt electronic processes.

"EDM systems considerably reduce the amount of paper that organisations produce, circulate and store whilst providing instant electronic access to imaged documents," he commented.

"The benefits of EDM include significant cost and time savings and greatly enhanced customer service. In addition, as electronic documents are legally permissible, organisations should not feel obligated to hold on to paper documents 'just in case'."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
